EXPLORING representation of the working classes
IN CULTURE AND MEDIA
What does Home and Hinterland mean to me? Home is about a working class community, close to and very similar to where I grew up and Hinterland – The Other – is about the lack of representation of the working class in culture and media – and in society in general. We’re demonised by the right and fetishised by the left, turned into a monster of stereotypes by the UK bourgeoisie and largely excluded by and from the Arts. Working on this project has confirmed my experience of many years as an artist and activist, that those that control the organisations that govern our lives actively discriminate against working class people and culture via conscious or unconscious institutionalised exclusion.
